“The Mystery of the Flooded Basement: Solved by a Baseball (and Keystone Exteriors!)”

It started out like any other rainy week in the Midwest — dark clouds, steady rain, and the peaceful sound of drops hitting the roof. That peace didn’t last long for one local family, though.

After a few storms, they started noticing something strange: the wood floors in the middle of their basement were buckling. Not near the walls or windows — but right in the center of the room. The carpet felt damp, the boards were swelling, and nobody could figure out why.

The homeowner — a determined dad — rolled up his sleeves, ready to play detective. He checked the sump pump. Working fine. The water heater? No leaks. The plumbing? Tight and dry. The walls were spotless. It didn’t make sense — how could the basement flood in the middle of the floor?

That’s when they decided to call Keystone Exteriors for help.

Enter the Keystone Team: Part Contractor, Part Detective

When our crew arrived, we did what we always do best — started from the outside in. Sometimes, water damage doesn’t start where you see it. It starts quietly, in places homeowners rarely look.

We inspected the grading, foundation, and window wells, and soon noticed something odd — one of the downspouts wasn’t draining at all.

A quick check up on the ladder revealed the culprit:
A baseball, wedged perfectly in the gutter downspout.

Apparently, Dad’s little sluggers had been practicing their swings in the backyard. One home run ball had found its way into the gutter system, blocking it completely. Every time it rained, the water had nowhere to go but over the edge — right into the window well below. From there, it seeped behind the foundation and into the middle of the basement floor. Mystery solved.

From Frustration to Fix

Once the baseball was removed (and returned to the kids), Keystone properly flushed the gutters, resealed the downspout, and redirected the drainage away from the home.
The result? Dry floors, happy homeowners, and one less ballgame hazard.

The family even joked that the next time it rains, they’ll check the gutters before blaming the sump pump.

Lesson Learned: Small Blockages, Big Problems

It’s funny how something as small as a baseball can cause such a big headache. But that’s the reality of home maintenance — tiny issues can turn into expensive repairs if left unchecked.

A clogged gutter might not seem urgent, but when it overflows:

  • It can flood window wells and basements

  • Damage siding and fascia boards

  • Erode landscaping and foundation soil

  • Lead to mold, rot, and warping floors

That’s why Keystone Exteriors always recommends cleaning your gutters at least twice a year — once in spring and once after the fall leaves drop. And if you’re seeing any strange water patterns, give us a call. Sometimes, it’s not what you think — and sometimes, it’s a baseball.
